The terroir of Napa Valley is perfect for Caymus Cabernet. It is 30 miles in length and as diverse as it gets, with many smaller appellations and communes giving birth to utterly unique, inimitable works of viticultural art is perfect to produce Caymus wines. It’s a life-enriching pleasure to taste Napa’s Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon, as it feels like conversing with the spirit of the landscape itself, its character and nuances deftly translated by the mouth-watering produce of countless vineyards. Caymus Vineyards is a Cabernet producer that takes inspiration from some of the Old World’s finest, and their takes on staple varietal expressions leave no critic without a story to tell.

“Napa Valley Cabernet” and “Special Selection Cabernet”

Let’s dive into the history of Caymus Cabernet. Caymus was conceived in 1972 by a young wine aficionado named Chuck Wagner, along with his parents. Since then, they have dominated the market when it comes to popular, approachable, and collectible Cabernet Sauvignon, with two Cabernet names that will become engraved in your memory forever – “Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon” and “Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon.” With almost two centuries of agricultural history in their blood, the success of Caymus Vineyards in the wine business was all but inevitable, and Caymus Vineyards continue to cement their reputation as one of Napa’s finest vineyards. As tends to be the case for many excellent Cabernet vineyards, the secret of Caymus lies in a tradition-inspired approach, good old fashioned hard work of their winery, and a passion for wine that rivals that of Dionysus himself.

1995 caymus special selection California Red

Sleek and well-structured, with a braid of exotic smoke, currant, green olive and herbal flavors that drape together nicely, holding a tight focus and showing how ripe, supple tannins can integrate without dominating. Finishes with a dash of mocha and spice.--1995 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2010. 2,000 cases made.Wine Spectator | 93 WSWhile it is fashionable to criticize this wine because of its price, and the secrecy surrounding the amount produced (who really cares?), the wine is unquestionably outstanding. The 1995 boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as an attractive bouquet with lavish quantities of toasty new oak and black currants. There is moderate tannin, good purity, and an open-knit, sexy style. If the wine had not fallen a bit short on the mid-palate, it would have merited an even higher score. It should drink well for 10-15 years. Based on the fame of this winery and the price of the wine, one would expect this Cabernet to compete with Colgin, Bryant Family Vineyards, Screaming Eagle, Araujo, and Harlan Estate. It does not. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon.Robert Parker | 90 RP(14% alcohol): Good bright, dark red. Sexy oak tones to the aromas of musky dark berries, menthol and dark chocolate. The enticing silky, spicy palate shows a light touch. An elegantly styled wine with a restrained sweetness and juicy, nicely integrated acidity to its plum and chocolate flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of granular tannins and very good lift and length.Vinous Media | 90 VM

2001 Caymus Special Selection, California Red

Caymus has been around for so long there is a tendency to under-estimate their wines. However, they have a brilliant track record as evidenced by the decade old 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection. Abundant chocolaty, black currant, licorice and coffee aromas soar from the glass of this perfumed wine. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, wonderful opulence, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous depth and not a hard edge to be found. While seemingly fully mature, the supple tannins, expansive fruit and glycerin, depth and overall balance suggest it will keep for another 15+ years.Robert Parker | 96 RPNo written review provided | 93 W&SCaymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2001 $136.
